About Chain Letters

This is very interesting.

Advice from Snopes

1)   Almost all E-Mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to
others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to
send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the
Guinness Book of Records for the most cards.  All it was, and all any of
this type of E-Mail is, is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking
information for telemarketers and spammers - - to validate active E-Mail
accounts for  their own purposes.

2)   Any time you see an E-Mail that says forward this on to '10' of
your friends sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck, or whatever, it
has either an E-Mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies
and E-Mails of those folks you forward. The host sender is getting a
copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of
'active' E-Mails to use in SPAM E-Mails, or sell to others that do.

You can do your friends and family members a GREAT favor by sending this
information to them; you will be  providing a service to your friends,
and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam E-Mails in the
future!

If you have been sending out (FORWARDING) the above kinds of E-Mail, now
you know why you get so much SPAM!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those type listings
regardless how inviting they might sound!

You think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT in the long
run.  Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later in life!

Also:  E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other
organization.  To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature
and full address of the person signing the petition.

To get help with your email program, click on HELP on the Menu Bar.

Turn off the VIEW pane in Outlook Express.
Some viruses can affect your computer by just viewing the message. In Outlook Express, click VIEW in the menu bar, choose LAYOUT, take check mark out of "Show preview pane" then APPLY and OK. After receiving, Hold down the CTRL key, left click on the ones you are sure will be spam to select them and Delete. If not sure, right click on it, choose Properties, Details, click the Message Source button. Here you can see the text of the message (Can be maximized to see better) and if you see a lot of gibberish, it will be graphics in the message that you probably don't want to see anyway. Double click on your safe messages to actually view it and reply, delete or whatever. Don't forget to clear out your sent and deleted messages periodically. You can always put the check mark back in "Show preview pane" later if wanted. To be sure nothing comes in after deleting your junk mail, you can click on the TOOLS, OPTIONS and on General Tab, take check mark out of  "Check for new messages every _ minutes. Now just click on  Send/Recv button when wanted.

Sort your Email messages to read from newest to oldest order. If you are reading older messages first, you may reply to a message that has already been answered in a later message in your list and didn't need to really reply to this one. Reading from newest first, you will see the latest replies if there were any related to what you were going to answer or reply to. May save some Emails not needed to be sent. As you go down the list of messages you may see some that you don't have to bother replying to because already answered.
In Outlook Express (and others)? when in your list of messages in the inbox, you can toggle the order of  the received messages by clicking on the  Received  button above the messages. It will remember next time you check email. You can also set the  Sent  and  Deleted  boxes to the same setting.
Note! You an also sort the  From  and  Subject  messages by clicking the buttons above the messages. Be sure to set the  Received  order before exiting.

If you are receiving emails from friends that you know should be safe but you get a warning message that says it may harm your computer, in outlook express, click on TOOLS, OPTIONS and select the SECURITY tab. Take the check mark out of where it says "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". Click APPLY and then OK. Now let your antivirus program decide.

Hint! When sending or replying to an email in an upset or angry mood, FIRST, send the email to yourself, Take a break, relax for awhile, then check your email. Chances are very good you may want to rephrase the message before sending or not send at all.

Settings in Outlook Express 6 you might want to change.
Click on TOOLS, OPTIONS. On the GENERAL tab, Put a check mark in "When starting, go to inbox" in case you closed in a different folder and wouldn't see your new messages.
On the SEND tab, if you like to add people in your address book manually the way you want, then you can take the check mark out of "Automatically put people I reply to in my address book" so you won't have 2 separate listings.
On the COMPOSE tab, you can change the font size for mail by clicking on the FONT SETTINGS button. You would want at least size 12.

Outlook's
Junk Email Options (Not Outlook Express)

Being the most efficient multi-tasker in the office usually comes down to setting the right priorities. Some people simply don’t have time to sift through an inbox teeming with spam. On the other hand, dreadful consequences could arise if an important client’s email winds up in Outlook’s Junk Email folder. Outlook lets you modify your junk email options according to the level of vigilance you demand. Outlook’s junk email filter is automatically set to Low; to change this setting, click the Tools pull-down menu and Options. Click the Junk Email button on the Preferences. In the Junk Email Options dialog box, you can choose from the four following levels of security: No Automatic Filtering, Low, High, and Safe Lists Only.
As its name suggests, No Automatic Filtering will not block any spam. Microsoft only recommends disabling the junk email filter if your mail server already uses an effective third party spam blocking utility. The low setting will typically only filter the most blatant spam, but the High setting may occasionally catch emails from legitimate senders. Safe Lists Only is the most restrictive filter. If you select this option, only emails from people in your Contacts folder and those you’ve specified under the Safe Senders and Safe Recipients lists.
To maintain a high level of spam filtering while allowing important emails to pass through, set the junk email filter to high and periodically check your Junk Email folder. When you find an email that isn’t spam, right-click the message and point to Junk Email. Click Mark As Not Junk, which opens the Mark As Not Junk dialog box. When you check the The Always Trust Email From checkbox, Outlook adds the senders email address to your Safe Senders list. Click OK to finish.
